Ep.20 - The Deed

  Original Airdate: February 8, 1973
Writer: James Menzies
Director: Vincent Sherman

Prologue:

"Walton's Mountain had been in our family since long before I was born, it was a mountain that gave of itself, we took trout from its swift streams, and we took from it constantly the lumber and firewood which provided our family with income. My grandfather used to say that the land was alive, that if you knew how to listen you could hear its voice, but at 17 I did more talking than listening. I remember one morning during the Depression hiking with Grandpa searching for trees that were ready for harvesting."

Synopsis:

As John-Boy and Grandpa scout for new trees to harvest they come across a surveyor who is marking their land. It seems that although the Waltons have been living on the mountain since 1789 they never acquired a deed to the property. Now the Packard lumber company plans to claim the land for themselves. When the family looks into the situation they learn that they will need to go to court and it will cost $200 to prevent the logging company from starting with their plans. The family looks into their finances and they can only muster about $47. John-Boy leaves home to find work in Wheeling, West Virginia. Yancy Tucker gives him a ride and secretly makes a delivery of moonshine to the back of a tattoo parlor. John-Boy makes his way to Mrs. Vandenberg's Boarding House to set up his accomodations. He meets Cissy Brubaker who's family only lives 6 miles from Walton's Mountain. Monty, the Boarder's son helps John-Boy to get a job as an apprentice at a machine shop.

Meanwhile the men back home are busy cutting lumber orders but are challenged with dull saw blades. After a week of work they have only managed to get $15 closer to their goal. John-Boy stops at a diner to supplement his week old sandwich with a $0.05 soup. He has made $18 at the factory which he plans to send $10 back home, $4 for his board and the remaining $4 to live on till the next pay day. Monty finds him at the diner and the go off to for some evening entertainment 2 tugs approach them and steal their money. John-Boy writes home with the news and asks his family for $5 to cover his costs. At the boarding house when he asks Mrs.Vandenberg for her understanding his fellow boarder Cissy pays for John-Boy's lodging. When he thanks her for her kindness she gives him a kiss.

Back home the saw motor has broke and the family realizes that the won't make the deadline. Mary Ellen decides to sell a treasured peuter teapot and makes $25 for the family. John-Boy takes Cissy to the movies and spots the muggers trying to hold up the ticket seller. He jumps one of the men and a local patrol officer arrives to take him to jail. The family has now raised $140. John-Boy arrives home with $50 reward money for helping to capture the muggers. With that the family is able to stop the logging company and acquire thei deed.

Epilogue:

"I had lived in a city, known adventure, found friends and even been kissed by a pretty girl, but it was good to be home again, to know that special love and to hear those special voices."
